4 November 2010

The next stage of the Mineral Core Strategy is now being formulated. If you would like to comment on it you can visit the consultation portal at the Council website here. This time they are leaving Site Allocation until after the MCS has been approved by the Secretary of State, estimated to be completed in April 2012. That is when things might again become interesting!

Consultations close for this stage on 17 December 2010.

14 August 2009

We now have a copy of the letter received at County Hall removing the sites from the MSAD list.

It is obvious from the letter that this should be seen as merely a reprieve and that steps must be taken to secure the future of Cannon Hill and Uddens against future threats of this nature.

13 August 2009

Cannon Hill and Uddens quarry proposals have been withdrawn by the Forestry Commission.

Due to the prospect of opposition to the proposals from Councillors on the Joint Advisory Committee and the potentially high cost of measures to counter objections, the Forestry Commission have informed County Halll that their contractors wish the application for mineral extraction at both Cannon Hill and Uddens to be withdrawn.

More to follow.

4 August 2009

We have been informed that the eagerly awaited meeting of the 'Minerals and Waste Policy Joint Advisory Committee', originally scheduled to take place on the 31 July, will now not meet until December this year or January next.

I will post the date, time and location of the meeting as soon as the information becomes available.

This meeting is to finalise the list of sites to be taken forward for further action.

16 June 2009

I have been corresponding with members of our group and we think it would be a good idea to ask anyone who has seen any interesting wildlife, not only protected species, on Cannon Hill to email us with details - species, date, location etc.

We will collect these reports for possible future use. Thanks for any help you can give.

15 May 2009 [updated 18 May 2009]

This notice has been posted on Cannon Hill inviting people to a guided walk starting at the Cannon Hill Road entrance on 23 May so that future plans for the plantations can be explained.

Also this map has been posted on the Forestry Commission website which it is assumed is the plan to which they will refer on the guided walk.

[This is part of the Forestry Commission's 'Forestry Plan Review' (an update to the National Forestry Plan) which is currently under public consultation. As it is running seperately to the quarry proposals no conclusions can be drawn linking the two.]

We have learned that the visit to sites referred to in the previous post will not include Cannon Hill as they have visited on a previous occasion.

6 May 2009

We received the following email from Dorchester today regarding the proposed meeting of 31 July.

".....It has been decided to postpone the meeting of the Joint Advisory Committee until Autumn 2009. Please contact me again in early August when I should have more details on the proposed date of the next meeting and its location. This meeting will be open to the public to attend.

On 31 July Members will be taken on a site visit in order to view some of the sites being proposed for inclusion in the Minerals Plan."

We don't know which sites will be visited or at what times but we will attempt to discover more and information will be posted here as soon as it becomes available.

24 March 2009

We are now able to bring you the "Outcomes from MSAD Consultation" document which was submitted to the recent joint committee meeting described on the 19th March. This itemises the principal comments submitted by 'stakeholders' (which includes people like you and me) up to the closure of the consultation period which ended on 12 December last.

Reading between the lines it would seem that the team is resigned to the fact that, due to the level of objections, they will lose some aggregate sites (hopefully including Cannon Hill) and are already thinking of sending out another letter inviting landowners to submit further sites for consideration.

The meeting on 31 July could therefore be crucial.

19 March 2009

Information has been received from Councillor Mrs Janet Dover about the 17th March meeting between the Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset Councils.

No sites were confirmed or removed at the meeting (the minutes of which are here) but representations were made on behalf of Cannon Hill (and Uddens). The proposed Wimborne site, on the water meadows opposite Canford School, had already been withdrawn.

It appears that another meeting of the committee is to be arranged for the 31 July which will be deciding which proposed quarry sites stay in the document and whether any are taken out.

It would probably be really important that members of the public attended this meeting (venue and time to be confirmed) to support their elected members, so cancel that holiday in Spain and stand ready to act!

More info about that meeting will be posted here as it becomes available.

28 February 2009

I have trawled through the final submissions on the DCC portal here and present the following figures (for interest only - I don't guarantee their absolute accuracy) :-

Total submissions for all 37 sites in the exercise - 3517.
Submissions for Cannon Hill only - 980 (27.9% of total)
(Uddens attracted 111 comments and Wimborne 651).

Of those 980 commenting on Cannon Hill I could find only one supporting the proposal.
There were 2 neutral 'no objections' :-

The Herpetological conservation Trust
The Environment Agency

Of the 977 disagreeing, the following were included :-

Bournemouth and West Hants Water
Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
Campaign to Protect Rural England
East Dorset Community Partnership
Natural England
Dorset Widlife Trust
East Dorset District Council
Highways Agency
East Dorset Youth Council

16 February 2009

Welcome back. We thought it was time to bring you up-to-date as there are now some movements afoot regarding the quarry proposals.

The 3498 submissions to the DCC which closed on 12 December last year have now been collated and they will be discussed at a joint meeting between Poole, Bournemouth and Doset County Councils on 17th March. The agenda for this meeting has not yet been promulgated but if and when this information becomes available it will be posted here.

Depending on the views of the Committee, it is intended that there will be consultation this autumn on those sites the Councils wish to take forward.

Watch this space!

17 December 2008

I have been looking through the responses today, and there are some pretty heavyweight objectors appearing, including one from Dr Andrew Nicholson of Natural England. This one seems to me to crystallise what most regular visitors and local residents feel about the threat to their enjoyment of Cannon Hill and Uddens.

I also spotted this objection to the 'Wimborne' proposal. There is obviously a dispute over ownership of the land, or access to it, which would seem to put the kybosh on that site.

In response to feedback from one of our contributors I have reworked the Gallery page to provide a simpler system for looking at the photos.

12 December 2008

The Dorset Wildlife Trust has indicated to us today that they have objected to the Cannon Hill and Uddens proposals. Momentum against is building up.

This morning 2CR carried a brief news item starring Brian. You can download the news item as an mp3 file here.

Today is the final day for responding to the proposals. You may stll register your objection until 3pm by using the Council online portal - if you have difficulty in using it you can phone the Council department involved on 01305 228585 or 228571 and ask for assistance.

11 December 2008

During this morning Brian was interviewed by 2CR for the breakfast programme broadcast between 6 and 9am tomorrow.

The reponses are appearing thick and fast on the Council Portal now and very heart felt and cogent many of them are. One interesting set I saw yesterday came from a representative of the Highways Authority and can be seen here. (Note that the same comments apply to Uddens, Wimborne, and Sturminster Marshall).

Today we will deliver the packet containing the objections collected on Tuesday to the Council Offices in Dorchester.

10 December 2008

After a busy day yesterday on the 'Hill' we managed to gather about 160 more objections during the period 06:00 - 17:00, which will be delivered to DCC in Dorchester on Thursday. A long, enjoyable, and very fruitful day.

Thank you all for coming along to see us including visits from Councillors Mrs Janet Dover, David Packer and prospective Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, Nick King. We managed to make a lot of new friends and valuable new allies in our 'Campaign' and we would like to thank John and Steph for allowing us to use their drive; and a special 'thank-you' goes to our volunteers who manned the area during the day. I will never forget the mutual surprise when, at about 06:15, we came face to face with our first objector, walking her dog by torchlight in the pitch darkness, to be closely followed by several friends!

See some of the pictures of the day in our gallery.

9 December 2008

We are operating an information point today at the Cannon Hill Rd entrance and what we want are objections.

Come along and use one our response forms (we have plenty) and leave it with us to deliver to Dorchester - saves you money and avoids delay in the Christmas Post. We will be there until dusk today.

7 December 2008

Do you object to the proposals?
Not posted your objection yet?
Why not come along to our special information point at the Cannon Hill Road entrance on Tuesday 9th December, give us your objection form and let us take it to Dorchester for you.

We will be there from dawn till dusk with more forms should you need one.

Why not come along and say hello!

6 December 2008

Wow! I have just collected the objections for the period 3-5 December here from the Council website and they add another 89 to the total against the proposals - we are over the 200 mark now!

Well done everyone.

3 December 2008

For those wishing to see the objections and who find navigating the Council Portal frustrating (like me), I have harvested the responses relating only to Cannon Hill appearing on the Council Online Portal for the period from 2nd November - 2nd December.

There are 99 pages here which contain in the region of 120 objections (and only one 'agree' that I could see - can you find it?).

29 November 2008

Today we start a large drop of leaflets/window posters in areas near Cannon Hill - this will take place over the next few days so if you don't receive yours today, don't worry. If you live in the area and receive a delivery please read it carefully. Your response is very important so download and send in your completed form, or respond online, and stick the poster in your window to show if you are against the quarry.

At this stage it is a numbers game so every objection is important. Please make sure your friends and neighbours are aware of the threat and urge them to act accordingly.

27 November 2008

Now you can download your own leaflets and window banner at the downloads page. Why not print some up and spread them around, and put up a banner in your car window?

26 November (pm) 2008

Great news! The committee voted unanimously to object to the proposals. There was a little uncertainty about the exact form of words voted on, but that will become clear when the minutes are published. One final push now to get as many objections as possible. The fight isn't over yet.

The proposal for the Wimborne site (opposite Canford School) has, apparently, been withdrawn! This was said to be at the behest of the landowner.

26 November (am) 2008

Roll up, roll up! Come and give your support and show them that you care. The meeting at Furzehill is at 10 am and Brian will be making an address. We hope to see you there.

A new Gallery feature has been added. Take a couple of minutes to look at the pictures - and see why we are so determined to save the place.

25 November 2008

Attended the presentation at the Allendale Centre, Wimborne. I was disappointed with the quality of the answers from the officer to some of the less than searching questions. "I don't think Cannon Hill will be infilled" was one, until shown the discussion document. Poor preparation.

Tomorrow is the 10 am meeting at the Council Chamber, Furzehill. Please try and come and hear the discussion.

23 November 2008

We contacted Nick King, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Mid Dorset and North Poole, about the ommission of the Cannon Hill reference number and description on the proforma response form sent out from his office. His reply can be found here.

Anyone downloading a partially completed response form from this site will find the details relevant to Cannon Hill already inserted. You are, of course, quite entitled to add other sites if you wish.

22 November 2008

The next event on the horizon is the Tuesday evening presentation at the Allendale Centre, Wimborne between 5 pm and 8 pm.

21 November 2008

We have information that a reporter from the Echo will be attending Wimborne Market today. Don't be shy, tell them what you think!

20 November 2008

1. The proposals to extract sand from Cannon Hill will be discussed at the East Dorset Council, Policy and Resources Committee meeting to be held at the Council Chamber, Furzehill, on Wednesday 26th November at 10 am.

The meeting is open to the public and you are urged to attend - the more people who turn up the better.

2. There are two public exhibitions in the Wimborne area organised by the Dorset County Council :-

Friday 21st November, Wimborne Market 9 am - 1:30 pm
Tuesday 25th November, Allendale Centre, Wimborne 5 pm - 8 pm

Councillors will be there to answer any questions.
